Gotisches Haus
The Gotisches Haus (Gothic House) is one of the best preserved and researched medieval burgher's houses in the state of Brandenburg. The surrounding walls and roof structure are the original.
Here you can go to the current temporary exhibition on the first floor of the Gotisches Haus.
Accessibility: The special exhibitions on the first floor are barrier-free.
The cellar of the solid, two-storey built house dating from 1452 accommodates the „Alchemy and everyday life“ exhibition.
Accessibility: Unfortunately, the exhibition in the Gotisches Haus is not barrier-free.
“Alchemy and everyday life”
The permanent exhibition presents highlights of the archaeological finds that came to light in the extensive excavations of the property and its cellar in 2013 and 2014.
Among these is the sensational find of the almost entirely preserved equipment of an apothecary, including retorts for distillation, lots of crucibles and pipettes, as well as a cross-section of a typical baroque household of the 18th century. Remains of tiled stoves, simple tableware and luxury goods from that age are displayed in their context.
The horse skeleton on show dates from the Middle Ages. Dead animals were buried hurriedly in what were known as „bone pits“ in confined courtyards in order to avoid the expense of disposal.
The cellar
The main exhibit, though, is the cellar itself, which must have formerly been the private counting-house of a rich merchant, as it was very expensively designed with niches and a floor providing insulation from the cold and damp.
Details of the construction history of the house, the excavations and research findings can be obtained from an interactive screen in the exhibition.
The upper storeys now accommodate the city's Culture Office.
