Steintorturm
The Steintorturm (Stone Gate Tower), picturesquely situated on a branch of the river Havel, is a fortified tower dating from the late Middle Ages. Now housing the exhibition on Havel shipping, it is the oldest museum site in Brandenburg an der Havel. The Historischer Verein Brandenburg (Havel) e.V presented its collection here from 1887 until 1923.
Following extensive restoration, part of Stadtmuseum Brandenburg an der Havel moved back into the five-storey tower in 1995. The Steintorturm is the only one of the four fortified towers still existing in the city to be accessible.
Accessibility: The Steintorturm and the exhibition is not accessible.
Havel shipping: boatmen and boatmakers
Its location on the Havel has been and is formative to the development of Brandenburg an der Havel, although the river in the inner city now is hardly used for anything more than tourism, because commercial shipping has bypassed the city via the Silo Canal for the last almost 100 years.
The exhibits bring to life the story of Havel boatmen and boatmakers in the 19th and 20th centuries. At 31.5 metres in height, the Steintorturm also offers fantastic views over the canal and the Havel.
Situated at the foot of the tower, the lovingly managed „Wenn ich mal groß bin…“ café invites you to stay a while and relax.
